Ending the season the way it began
Colts earn 7-0 win over Patriots

It took a while but the Colts, behind the Orient Express backfield of Devyn Shing and Welby Wu, closed out its first season in the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools Class AAA, with a 7-0 Homecoming triumph over Heritage Academy.
With the victory, Lee Academy finished with a 4-7 mark. Heritage ended its season at 3-8.
“It was good to get the win,” said Lee Academy Athletic Director and head coach Robert Daniels. “It’s a good feeling. For our seniors, it was good for them to go out on a winning note. For our returning players, it shows them what they have to do to pre-pare for next season.
“We’re going to be small again numbers wise which means we’ll need many players to go both ways. I don’t like it what we’re going to have to do.”
If Daniels can get the same effort next year that he got from the Colts in the final game of the 2009 campaign, Lee Academy should do fine.
With a few breaks here and there, the Colts could’ve finished with a better record. There were a couple of games where they competed well enough to win.
Against Heritage, it appeared early on that it would take a few breaks for the Colts to emerge victorious. In a game played on a muddy turf and at times, conducted in a heavy down pour of precipitation, the contest remained scoreless despite several blown opportunities by both teams.
Heritage had a pair of touchdowns called back because of penalties and the Patriots missed a 33 yard field goal attempt.
Lee Academy didn’t fare too much better, missing two field goal attempts and an interception return called back late in the game that would’ve added another score.
Wu recorded the game’s only score with 1:46 remaining on a 21-yard run. Trent Williams added the PAT.
“It was called 33 tag where he starts out on one side and breaks across on the other,” Daniels said. “He made a good run and had good blocking up front from Bo (Armstrong) and Rod (Freeman).”
Wu finished with 64 yards on 17 carries while Shing, whose father Daniel Jr. is stationed overseas, finished with 81 yards on 18 carries.
“Devyn’s dad was supposed to make this game but at the last minute, couldn’t,” said Daniels. “But at least his son can tell him that (Lee Academy) won.”
Heritage Acad. 0 0 0 0 - 0
Lee Academy 0 0 0 7 -7
LA - Wu 21 run (Williams kick).
